What is equestrian therapy?

What is equestrian therapy?

Equestrian therapy uses the movement, rhythm, and relationship with horses as therapeutic tools. The horse's multidimensional movement closely mimics the human gait, stimulating muscle groups, improving balance, and reducing spasticity. Beyond the physical, the bond between participant and horse builds trust, emotional regulation, and social skills in ways that traditional therapy rarely matches.

Who it helps

Strong evidence exists for: Autism Spectrum Disorder (social engagement, sensory processing, communication), PTSD and trauma (nervous system regulation, trust, grounding), physical rehabilitation (stroke recovery, cerebral palsy, spinal injury), and emotional regulation (anxiety, depression, behavioural challenges). Every session is adapted to the individual. No riding experience needed.

How it works

Each participant goes through three phases designed to build trust, establish a therapeutic relationship with the horse, and deliver measurable outcomes.

1

Phase 1: Assessment and introduction

  • Initial consultation with participant and family
  • Goal-setting aligned with NDIS plan outcomes
  • Introduction to the horse and facility at a calm pace
  • Safety briefing and consent process
2

Phase 2: Active therapy sessions

  • Weekly individual or small-group sessions
  • Mounted and unmounted activities tailored to goals
  • Progress tracking against NDIS outcome measures
  • Family involvement and home strategy recommendations
3

Phase 3: Review and transition

  • Formal progress review with participant and family
  • Updated goal-setting for the next phase
  • Transition plan (continuation, graduation, or referral)
  • Report prepared for NDIS plan review
Two stories of healing

Two stories of healing

Every horse at our facility was rescued. Most came from difficult situations: neglect, injury, or uncertainty. Through patient rehabilitation, they became therapy partners. That parallel isn't accidental. Our participants and our horses are on the same journey: rebuilding trust, recovering function, and finding a life that feels whole again.

What families say about equestrian therapy

"After six months of equestrian therapy, my son made eye contact for the first time. Words don't do it justice."
